Bruker Daltonics
Senior Electronics Design Engineer / Electronics Engineering Manager
May 2010 to December 2014
Initially worked as a Senior Electronics Design Engineer and then became manager of a new Electronics and Firmware group (8 people) in the fall of 2012.
Was Principal Electronics Designer for 2 scientific instruments. Each instrument had 8-10 modules and several dozen PC boards. Designs included 3KV RF voltage amplifiers with large air core resonant inductors and ultra-stable feedback control, +/- 350V DC amplifiers, DSP based module controllers, Temperature, Pressure and Vacuum Control, Filament Emission Current Regulator, Data Acquisition Module and System Power and Interconnect Design.
More recently was the main hardware architect for the design of a new digital platform for communicating between electronic modules inside an instrument and between the instrument and a PC. This involved the design of an ARM processor based controller with a Cyclone V FPGA and a daughter board that allowed scan and acquisition control and inter-module communications to be tested.
Varian, Inc.
Senior Electronics Design Engineer
March 2001 to May 2010
Was the Principal Electronics Design Engineer for several analytical instrumentation product designs. Designed +/- 6 KV voltage switching electronics, a data acquisition board that ran 5 KV away from ground potential, a new DSP based controller board with USB interface, PID controlled heater circuits, an ion gauge controller circuit, pressure regulation circuits, and a full set of diagnostic circuitry and self-test programs. Supported EMI and safety certification of final instruments.
Bear Instruments, Inc.
Principal Electronics Engineer
March 1994 to March 2001
Was one of the 3 founders of Bear Instruments and the Principal Electronics Engineer. Bear Instruments designed and manufactured a small Bench Top Mass Spectrometer. The product design was the first of its kind and it dramatically decreasing the size of a Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer. Was responsible for all the electronics in the product and for assisting with day to day business activities as an officer of the company.
Finnigan MAT (Now Thermo Fisher Scientific)
Electronics Design Engineer
Was the main Electronics Engineer on a project designing a new Scientific Instrument. Designed over 2 dozen PC boards, wrote software in C, evaluated the final system for analytical instrument performance, noise performance, temperature drift, and EMC making improvements as needed.
